Hyparschale – A Historic Monument Reimagined

The renovation of the Hyparschale combined heritage preservation with the city’s modern functional requirements. Instead of serving as a large hall, the Hyparschale, designed by Ulrich Müther in 1969 in Magdeburg’s Rotehorn City Park, now functions as a contemporary, versatile event venue for up to 600 guests. Four functional cubes occupy the corners of the square floor plan, housing event spaces, a café, and ancillary rooms, while an open, cross-shaped central area provides unobstructed views of the roof structure. A specially developed carbon concrete method reinforces the delicate roof shell and enhances its translucency. The historic light bands have been restored with transparent glazing, emphasizing the original spatial concept.
